Description

Motivation and application domain
Fibrosis is a pathological state of the liver, characterised by the formation of fibrotic regions in the liver tissue. Such fibrotic region disrupt normal blood flow and also affect oxygen transport and uptake.

General objectives and main activities
Aim of this thesis is to build a mathematical model of blood flow and oxygen transport and consumption in the liver lobule. Both healthy and pathological conditions will be considered. The liver tissue will be modelled as a porous medium with anisotropic properties. Blood will be modelled as a Newtonian fluid. The mathematical problem will be solved making use of the finite element method using the software Comsol Multiphysics.

Training Objectives (technical/analytical tools, experimental methodologies)
The student will learn how to model flow and transport processes in porous media. The student will also improve his/her knowledge on blood flow in the microcirculation and organ perfusion.

Place(s) where the thesis work will be carried out: DICCA University of Genoa
