Description
Motivation and application domain
In vitro models of the brain based on 3D structures, realistic connectivity as well as neuronal compositions are nowadays essential. For this reasons, goal of this thesis is to provide a new experimental model where neuronal spheroids coming from different brain regions are functionally coupled to generate complex structures.
General objectives and main activities
Development of a new experimental protocol to cultivate complex neuronal structures based on cortical and hippocampal neurons;
Characterization of the so achieved structures in terms of: i) geometrical properties; ii) cell composition; iii) mechanical properties; iiii) exhibited patterns of electrophysiological activity.

Training Objectives (technical/analytical tools, experimental methodologies)
Cell culture procedures; Microscopy techniques; MEA-based set-up; Data analysis (MATLAB-based) algorithms.
