Motivation and application domain
Firefighting activities are characterized by challenging environment and operational conditions, placing firefighters at risk of adverse events.
Physiologically monitoring firefighters during operational activities and showing them their status could improve safety and allow potentially dangerous conditions to be promptly identified.
Although several systems for monitoring firefighters' physiological parameters have been proposed in literature, many of them are bulky or restrict firefighters' movements and field of view. These aspects are essential for safety.

General objectives and main activities
The objective of this thesis is to design and develop a system to continuously monitor firefighters' vitals, while being integrated into their equipment without significantly interfering with operational activities.
The student is required to:
- Identify the most appropriate physiological signal to be monitor
- Design an appropriate way to provide real time feedback and alert without interfering with firefighters’ movements and field of view
- Design and develop a wearable system to collect the data and provide feedback to be coupled with firefighters’ operational equipment
- Validate the system in a simulated environment
