Description

Motivation and application domain
Efficient management of biomedical technologies is a key factor in ensuring the quality and accessibility of healthcare services. Diagnostic imaging equipment, such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound, represents high-cost technological resources that are in high demand, and their proper management directly affects waiting times and the overall efficiency of the healthcare system. Data-driven approaches enable the monitoring of the actual utilization of diagnostic equipment, the identification of inefficiencies in operational processes, and the development of strategies to improve resource allocation.

General objectives and main activities
Liguria Digitale, in collaboration with the Liguria Region and the Local Health Authorities (ASL), manages services aimed at reducing waiting times for specialist visits and diagnostic examinations, while ensuring compliance with clinical priority guidelines.
The objective of the thesis is to analyze data on the utilization of diagnostic equipment (CT, MRI, ultrasound, etc.) to determine whether these resources are being used at their full capacity and whether waiting lists can be reduced. Often, these devices are not utilized to their maximum potential. This analysis has two main outcomes: reducing patient waiting times and improving the amortization of the machines.
The main activities of the thesis will include:
• Analysis of key performance indicators related to diagnostic equipment usage.
• Development of Business Intelligence tools, particularly using Power BI.
• Interpretation of the results and identification of potential opportunities for improving the organization and scheduling of diagnostic services.

Training Objectives (technical/analytical tools, experimental methodologies)
During the proposed thesis, the student will acquire and apply the following skills:
• Analysis and management of healthcare data from hospital information systems, with reference to PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) used for the management and exchange of diagnostic imaging data.
• Data processing and integration of datasets related to diagnostic procedures (e.g., CT, MRI, ultrasound), aimed at evaluating equipment utilization and waiting times.
• Use of Power BI, for data cleaning, modeling, and the creation dashboards to monitor healthcare system performance indicators.
• Understanding of the organizational processes and the management dynamics of regional healthcare services.

Place(s) where the thesis work will be carried out: DIBRIS, Liguria Digitale
