Description

Motivation and application domain
Ultrasound waves are used for thermal therapy to treat tumors. Aim of this work is to develop a numerical model of wave propagation in realistic bone geometries.

General objectives and main activities
To develop a numerical model of wave propagation in bones, starting from geometries reconstructed from CT data. The model will allow us to predict heat production and temperature evolution in tissues. The model will be embedded into a therapy planning visualisation tool. The main activities are as follows: i) segmentation of CT data, ii) design and development of the numerical model based on the ray tracing technique, iii) development of a user interface.

Training Objectives (technical/analytical tools, experimental methodologies)
Learning mathematical techniques to model ultrasound wave propagation. In particular, the ray tracing method will be used. Learning Python programming and parallelisation techniques.

Place(s) where the thesis work will be carried out: Eindhoven University of Thechnology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands
