Description

Motivation and application domain
Because of war, accidents in unsafe environment, and health care problems, the upper-limb amputee population in developing countries is growing. The development of an effective and inexpensive upper-extremity prosthesis can help an amputee to regain independence and working ability

General objectives and main activities
The overall goal of this project is to design a prosthetic upper limb (arm+hand) with the following characteristic: minimum cost, durability, ease of repair, adaptability to local materials, and cultural acceptability. The general objectives and activities are:
1. To design the hardware architecture of a upper limb prosthesis (hand and/or arm)
2. To develop and implement software modules for control and power optimization
3. To test the device with different grasping tasks in lab settings

Training Objectives (technical/analytical tools, experimental methodologies)
The things that I will learn:
1. Theoretical basis of prostheses
2. Hardware and software design in prosthetics
3. Control theory applied to prosthetic devices
Myoelectric and/or movement-based actuation
4. 3d printing
5. Data analysis and software testing

Place(s) where the thesis work will be carried out: Neurolab, Dibris. The project will be carried out in collaboration with Time-for-Peace onlus, Genova.
